This week math was not really instructed as my students have been doing NWEA testing. As well as taking a test in math on mean median mode and range and also, are being introduced to a new project for math so I could only look at the sample work of my preassessment which was their timed multiplication test.
My students did NOT do well on this, most of them the lower number times tables but after five they do not know them at all. This is with the exception of the ten and eleven facts. As they were taking it most of the students in the class were using their fingers to count or had a scrap piece of paper to add out the numbers they were multiplying.
When I asked a few students after what they worked on last year involving multiplication they said they did take timed tests however, they always just used the table that was on their name tags. I could tell this was a common trend throughout the class because a lot of them were looking at the table they had on their current name tags so I covered them all up during the test to guarantee good results. This to me shows me that not only did they not get enough practice with multiplication last year but before I can start my unit which the big idea (for right now) is patterns of multiplication, I need my students to have a good grasp on their facts I am not going to be able to expand their thinking and knowledge on multiplication if they are not understanding the facts as they are now.
