Behrman's Writing Samples: 2nd Grade

Student Writing Sample #1


This student can:
1) recount a short sequence of events (2.W.3)
2) correctly include temporal words to signal event order (2.W.3)
3) demonstrate knowledge of the conventions of standard English capitalization, such as days of the week, I, and holidays (2.L.2).
4) demonstrate knowledge of the conventions of punctuation (2.L.2.).
5) demonstrate knowledge of the conventions of spelling when writing (2.L.2.)

Student Writing Sample #2

This student can:
1)  recount a short sequence of events (2.W.3)
2) demonstrate a basic understanding of how verbs convey a sense of past, present, or future (1.L.1.e).
3) demonstrate a basic understanding of temporal words to signal event order (2.W.3).
4) use personal pronouns (1.L.1.d).
5) use frequently occurring adjectives (1.L.1.f).

    I can write what happened in a sequence of events.
    I can use proper capitalization.
    I can write my thoughts in paragraph form.
    I can incorporate detail of what happened.

  2. 1) My student can effectively recount a sequence of events. A helpful next instructional step for improving this student's writing would be to include figurative language. There are very few adjectives and his vocabulary is quite bland. I would love to work with him to create a more vivid picture for his readers and choose powerful words. (2.L.5.)
